Chief Executive Officer
Diane brings more than 20 years knowledge and experience in life sciences to this role, gained from senior roles in industry, academia and in SMEs, including the European Bioinformatics Institute and Pfizer, where she was head of e-biology.
She moved into business development at Pfizer, where she was responsible for negotiating licenses and collaborations to enable access to novel technologies and assets up to the pre-proof of concept stage. She was recruited to establish the business development team at Edinburgh BioQuarter. Under her leadership, the BioQuarter business development team successfully established strategic alliances with many of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies. Subsequently as Managing Director of BioCity Scotland, she was instrumental in increasing tenant occupancy and achieving Enterprise Area Status for the site.
Business Development and Contracts
Marie Claire has a commercial track-record in a biotech SME environment having founded, fund-raised and ran her own business for over 10 years. She is experienced across all aspects of this type of environment with a broad experience base in business development and contractual engagement, from evaluation, collaborations and licensing. She has worked with the majority of the top 20 pharmas across a range of opportunities.
Marie-Claire has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, held academic positions in France, Nottingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow. In 2006, she was awarded the Gannochy Trust award for Innovation, Scotland's highest award for individual achievement in innovation. She currently sits on the Life Sciences Industry Leadership Group (LS-ILG).
Marian has a background in Business Development and Professional Relations working in large pharmaceutical companies, including Eli Lilly and Astra Zeneca. She has recently (2016) gained a Masters in Stratified Medicine and Pharmacological Innovation (with Merit) from the University of Glasgow.
She has extensive experience of the medical marketing interface for oncology pipeline products and has been part of a large multi-disciplinary team focused on development through to successful launch of targeted treatments for cancer.
Senior Financial Analyst
Sally qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Glasgow-based firm Downie Wilson, she then moved to Grant Thornton & KPMG in Audit & Advisory roles working in the UK & Canada.
After leaving practice Sally moved to Portman Travel, where she held various senior accounting roles including acquisition of smaller travel businesses, Company Secretary duties and line management of 50 staff in the Finance Department.
In her role as Senior Scientist, Carolyn has been instrumental in the development and optimisation of the library preparation and sequencing protocols used by the Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre’s NGS facility. She is part of the core team working to bring lab operations at SMS-IC in line with ISO standards, and assists with the management of a number of key projects.
Carolyn has a BSc (Hons) in Virology and an MRes with Distinction in Molecular Medicine, both from the University of Glasgow. In 2013 she was awarded a PhD from the University of Glasgow’s Institute of Cancer Sciences, where she investigated epigenetic gene regulation.
As Quality Manager, Lorna is responsible for establishing, implementing and maintaining the quality management system at SMS-IC. Using the knowledge and experience gained from ISO 9001 Internal and Lead Auditor training, as well as UKAS ISO 15189 Medical Laboratory assessor certification, Lorna has been instrumental in the laboratory’s transition from a research environment into a laboratory that works to a high standard of quality.
Lorna has a BSc (Hons) in Forensic Biology and an MSc in Forensic Science from the University of Strathclyde, which incorporated a research project carried out in an ISO 17025 accredited forensic services laboratory. Lorna was previously a laboratory technician at SMS-IC, gaining knowledge and expertise in next generation sequencing. Lorna has 2 years’ prior experience as an associate scientist in molecular biology with a contract research organisation. Through her time with this CRO, Lorna become competent in a range of techniques, working in a GMP and GLP accredited environment.
Senior Scientist - DNA Lead
As a Senior Scientist at SMS-IC, Linda provides world-leading scientific expertise and technical knowledge required to run a successful Next Generation Sequencing lab. She is experienced in providing expert IT knowledge on how the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) operates, as well as achieving and working to ISO 15189 standards.
Linda has a BSc (Hons) in Immunology and Pharmacology from Strathclyde University, Glasgow. She has gained previous experience working as a Medical Technologist in the laboratory for the leading clinical research organization, Q2 Solutions (previously known as Quintiles), working on a range of molecular diagnostics including virology and oncology. In a previous role held at Q2 Solutions, Linda was a Set-Up Coordinator, responsible for the design and support of clinical drug trials for the major top 20 global pharmaceutical companies.
Kathryn is a key member of the sequencing team at Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre, working on a range of projects including Ovarian cancer and Multiple Sclerosis. Kathryn also assists with data centre maintenance, as well as updating data management procedures and bringing information security up to ISO standards.
Kathryn has a BSc (Hons) in Immunology from the University of Glasgow. Since graduating, she has gained over three years’ laboratory experience in the pharmaceutical-testing industry working as an analyst for leading Contract Research Organisations Covance and BioOutsource. Throughout this time, Kathryn has gained knowledge and expertise in a range of laboratory techniques in highly regulated GxP environments.
Executive PA to Chief Executive Officer and Marketing and Communications
Claire is an experienced executive PA with more than 16 years' experience working across various Life Science departments at the University of Glasgow. Claire provides high level professional administrative and secretarial support to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at SMS-IC and the team to enhance its internal and external efficiency, effectiveness and reputation.
In addition, Claire has recently taken on the role of developing and implementing SMS-IC marketing and communications strategy.
Craig has a wealth of experience working in IT since joining Hewlett Packard as a graduate in 2003, Craig has worked in various IT roles for UTV, Strathclyde Police, NHS, Life Technologies, Thermo Fisher and most recently iomart group. Craig is responsible for managing the Internal IT systems, improving performance of the IT systems and providing IT strategy as a Consultant to SMS-IC.
Craig graduated in Broadcast Engineering from Salford University in 2003 and recently attained his PgDip in Management of IT Innovation from Glasgow Caledonian University. Craig has a variety of technical qualifications including; Prince2, ITIL, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, VMware Certified Professional and is a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute for IT.
